Do All Black Lives Matter? Casting Light on Afro Cuban Experiences

In February, let’s extend the spotlight to African descendants across the Americas. There is much to learn from their shared experiences and achievements inside and outside of the United States.

In 2021, Cubans, many of African descent, yelled through the island streets “Black Lives Matter.” The act showed solidarity with the African American movement and emphasized a similar struggle with economic inequality, political disenfranchisement, and violent disregard for their livelihood. To their dismay, the Black Lives Matter organization released a statement that demonstrated misunderstanding of their perspective and struggle. As a communications scholar and researcher, I moved to understand more deeply why a disconnect might exist between the African American and Afro Cuban communities.
