Drums rumbled inciting Carlota to pick up her machete for war. Kidnapped from her homeland, Carlota knew fighting was her only way to freedom.
During my time in Cuba, Afro Cuban women’s stories were imprinted in my mind as I discovered how they navigated their unique social position. We learned that some sold their breast milk in the square to support their families since women of the dominant class believed breast feeding their babies beneath their status. They demonstrated the spirit of economic perseverance and social justice through entrepreneurship.
